Today's snow kind of caught me off guard. I found out about it much like I did yesterday's cold: on my computer, about twenty minutes before stepping out the door. Not really sure how to cope with it, I put some fenders on my track bike and got out of the house not knowing what to expect.
One would expect that after a few winters (or even a few weeks) you'd know what's up. What to wear, what bike to ride, what tires to use... But for some reason it's still a puzzle. Maybe some of it has to do with the near-impossibility of the task of staying warm and not crashing your bike for nine hours in a snow storm while trying to make a little money at the same time. Maybe there is no answer, and every year rather than find out what's practical, you just suck it up and go freeze your feet off while you ride your bike.
The brakeless fixie might not have been the best bike for the occasion but was wicked-fun and probably the quickest way to get used to snow-riding again. After work, I bought a shiny new fork with canti bosses so I can run cross tires and brakes. We'll see how that goes.
