Best places to eat for under $5: Chinatown Edition

Although most places in chinatown offer lunch-time eats for $5 or less, few are as awesome as Le Ruby Rouge. Away from the pedestrian hustle of St-Laurent and de la Gauchetière, Ruby Rouge sits below the latter on the lesser-traveled Clark St. It's on the second floor and you need to go through a weird mall-type place to get there which is a sight on it's own. (There's pretty gruesome butcher operation on the first floor and if you're not interested in seeing an animal carcass get split in half by a band saw, I suggest you avert your eyes.)

The restaurant itself looks like a giant Chinese ballroom and is usually pretty full with seniors. When ordering, get the first thing on the menu (chicken or pork!!!) It's $3.95 and comes with tea, rice, spicy sauce and salty ginger onions. It took me a while before I learned how to order here. Generally, it scores pretty well on the "wha is going on?" chart.

Oh yeah, don't forget to get yourself a cup of Montreal's worst coffee! It's free in the big metal caffétière by the door on your way out.
